Gua Sha Therapy Explained
Our center has recently started offering clients Gua Sha, but many people are unaware of its existence. Here is everything you need to know about the therapy.
WHAT IS IT?
Gua Sha is part of the Chinese massage tradition and it goes back at least seven centuries.
However, it is only recently that it has become known in the west.
Gua Sha means to ‘scrape away fever’ and in the past was seen as a way of unblocking the energy in the body, which was causing illness.
Today, its main focus is to get rid of inflammation and heat in the body.
HOW DO WE DO IT?
Most massage, like they offer at Blissful Balance Massage, uses the hands of the therapist to deliver the treatment. Gua Sha is different because it uses an object.
This object has been, in days gone by, a soup spoon or sometimes a coin. However, today your therapist will probably use a specially manufactured tool made for the purpose of massage.
Whatever the object is, it is one with a rounded and smooth edge which is pressed against the skin.
The skin is first prepared with oil and then the massage therapist uses the designated tool to perform a series of downward movements across the body. This is done at a 45 degree angle and is designed to bring the source of the heat up to the skin’s surface, ready to expel it from the body.
WHERE IS IT DONE?
The areas of the body which are most likely to see this technique performed on it are the arms, legs, neck, back and buttocks.
It can also be used on the face, but it is done a lot more sensitively!
Where it is used, depends on the condition being treated. Speak to your therapist to ask which areas they would recommend for the treatment.
WHEN WOULD WE USE IT?
The main purpose of the treatment is to increase the blood flowing around the afflicted area. This will help to bring down any inflammation that there is there. It also has the added beneficial effect of helping to aid the body’s own immune system.
Gua Sha is advisable for people suffering from illnesses, such as colds and flu, as well as everyday pains and tensions.
WHY DO WE DO IT?
There are numerous benefits associated with the practise and use of Gua Sha. These include;
- A boost to your immunity.
Gua Sha can help to restart and reinvigorate a sluggish immune system. For this reason it is often popular during the colds and flu season. It helps the patient fight off illness and enhances the natural healing system of the body.
Gua Sha is recommended for anyone suffering with recurrent illnesses and chronic health conditions.
- A reduction in pain
One of the main reasons that people seek Gua Sha treatment is because they are suffering from a painful condition.
The treatment’s main aim is as an anti inflammatory. This means it is a good treatment to have for any aches and pains and swelling.
It works by reducing the source of the inflammation around the affected area.
- Better circulation
Gua Sha will help to improve the flow of blood around your body. It moves the fluids around and this also helps expel toxins and metabolic waste, which collects in the muscles.
- Anti Aging
Gua Sha when used on the face can help to re firm the skin and bring down puffiness around the eye area. It is also credited with helping to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.
- Help with chronic conditions
Gua Sha can help with issues such as migraines, stress, anxiety and also problems associated with the menopause.
WHEN SHOULDN’T I HAVE GUA SHA?
Gua Sha is mostly safe for everyone, but there are still some circumstances when it is best avoided.
Your practitioner will be happy to speak to you about your medical issues and will suggest you speak to your medical practitioner before commencing treatment.
You should not have Gua Sha if you have;
- An open wound or infection
- You have a pacemaker fitted
- You have had surgery recently
